Delta Irrigation Enhancement Project 2011 - 2013

Location: Delta, BC

Hired By: BC Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure (MOTI)

Cost: $22 Million

Delivery: Traditional design-bid-build and design-bid procurement.

Project scope: This irrigation enhancement project involved the planning, design, and construction of a system that delivers clean irrigation water with salinity monitoring controls. It included channel/culvert enhancements, a major Fraser River intake pump, four new automated gates, a retrofit of two existing flood boxes with salinity sensors and automated gates, construction of two new automated lift stations and the supply and installation of 20 additional manual gates.

Our role: Sun Coast provided senior-level project management and procurement advisory services. While the MOTI does not typically deliver complex irrigation systems, our team of project managers and construction managers rolled up their sleeves to deliver this important project. We managed multi-disciplinary, multi-organizational technical teams as we:

  • Developed conceptual and detailed designs
  • Delivered cost estimates, specifications, and tender documents
  • Offered project advisory support during the environmental application process
  • Assessed market conditions and delivery options
  • Liaised constantly with stakeholders, which included the Corporation of Delta, the local farming community and the Agriculture Land Commission
